Blue Jays at the World Baseball Classic – March 8

On another day of incredible WBC action, a pair of Blue Jays veterans flashed some impressive power and production. Here’s a look at how everyone from the team performed on Sunday.

3B Kazuma Okamoto | Japan

Finished 0-for-2 with two walks in Japan’s 4-3 win over Australia. He’s just 1-for-10 so far in the tournament, but did make this slick play in the field.

RHP Yariel Rodriguez | Cuba

The righty reliever collected his second hold after tossing two more shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out three in Cuba’s 7-4 win over Colombia. Over two outings so far, he’s thrown 4.1 innings allowing no runs, no walks, just one hit, and striking out six. It’s been an impressive showing for a guy trying to work his way back into the Jays’ bullpen mix.

1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr | Dominican Republic

Vladdy continues to show his made for the big moments with a 2-for-4 afternoon including a home run and three runs batted in during the DR’s 12-1 win over the Netherlands. He’s 3-for-8 to start the tournament with six RBI in his first two games.

LHP Adam Macko | Canada

With James Paxton approaching a pitch count limit, Macko was summoned in the middle of an at-bat and gave up a single to Christian Bethancourt on the first pitch he threw. Macko recovered to strike out the next batter he faced and was replaced the following inning.

2B Leo Jimenez / Panama

Jimenez drew back into the starting lineup after sitting out Saturday’s loss to Puerto Rico. He made a nice defensive play, but finished 0-for-2 at the plate and was relieved for a pinch hitter in the 6th inning. That hitter, veteran Ruben Tejada, delivered a crucial infield hit that gave Panama a lead they would not relinquish in the 4-3 win over Canada. He’s hitless in five at bats so far in the tournament with a walk and a strikeout.

OF Ismael Munguia | Nicaragua

After a productive first two games, Munguia fell silent in Nicaragua’s 5-0 loss to Israel, finishing 0-for-3. So far in pool play, he’s 5-for-10 with a walk and an RBI.

OF RJ Schreck | Israel

Schreck displayed power on Saturday and patience on Sunday, going 0-for-1 with three walks and a run scored. Through Israel’s first two games, the outfield prospect is 2-for-5 with a home run, one RBI, and two runs scored.

C Alejandro Kirk | Mexico

The veteran backstop just missed a home run in his first at-bat, settling for an RBI double. Two trips later, he didn’t miss again launching a three-run blast to deep left-centre field. He finished 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored as part of Mexico’s 16-0 rout of Brazil.
